Talk:Michel Abreu

From BR Bullpen

His BR page lists him as 6'3" 245, much bigger than we have here. Also the birthdate is listed as 1/2/79. milb.com has the 1/2 birthdate for the Dunedin coach as well. The 2010 BA Almanac has the same info as the main BR page. --Jeff (talk) 06:49, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

All the recent figures seem to agree on the 6'3" 145, including his NPB page [1] (which has the January 2 1979 date of birth as well). That's likely the most reliable source. --Philippe (talk) 12:21, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

p.s. a 1975 birthdate would have made his a very late starter by Cuban standards of the time. 1979 makes a lot more sense with his career profile. --Philippe (talk) 12:24, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

He started playing in Cuba's top league in 1994, which would have been highly unlikely with a 1979 birthdate. Ecured says 1977. Also, he was playing for the Cuban national team in 1999, which would have been somewhat odd (though not unheard of) at age 20, especially in a time before the widespread defections led to much younger players. The old IBAF website listed him as being born 1/2/75. It's much more likely, IMO, that he made up the 1979 birthdate when leaving Cuba to try to appeal more to MLB teams. - --Mischa (talk) 16:19, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

It's interesting that his 1994-1996 playing record in Cuba does not appear on his BR Register page. --Philippe (talk) 11:26, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

The BR Register doesn't appear to have any player stats for Cuba in those seasons (well, I only checked 1996, but I'm guessing they start with the 1997-1998 campaign based off the missing '96 stats). - --Mischa (talk) 17:01, 20 April 2017 (UTC)
