Talk:Jay Clarke

From BR Bullpen

Was this the guy who was supposed to have hit 8 hr in a minor league game circa 1902?

Yeah, June 15, 1902 he hit 8 homeruns in a Texas League game. Personally, I've known this fact for years now. Soxrock 21:35, 26 September 2007 (EDT)

Interesting fellow[edit]

I say this because Nig Clarke has ties to now three historical events. This guy is indeed very interesting. I'll add some images later on, btw SoxrockEdit list/Talk

Justin Jay Clarke[edit]

I'm from Amherstburg ,Ont. Learning alot about his history.........He started baseball at Assumption College in Windsor Ont. in 1897. He developed arm strength by throwing rocks at chickens. He was 1 quarter native indian, hense the nickname "nig"

There is alot more, but I will save it for the residents of Amherstburg............what a gem!

Racially insensitive nicknames: "Nig" and "Chief"[edit]

BB-Ref has changed their reference to "Jay Justin Clarke" with a footnote that SOME sites present him as "Nig". Perhaps it is time for BR-Bullpen to NOT be one of those aforementioned sites, and join with its parent site.

And change entries like "Chief Bender", "Chief Johnson", and "Chief Meyers", and any others that apply

I raised the issue on Talk:Chief Bender after BR made their change; no input yea or nay. It makes sense for me that the site here matches the main site. - Mischa (talk) 18:53, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

In creating pages for Negro League players, I've also noticed that a lot of the "colorful", but usually derogatory nicknames, are no longer used as the main name by B-Ref. I'm following their lead as it's a policy with which I agree. Philippe (talk) 19:55, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

Other than Charles "Chino" Smith, and Andrew "Jap" Payne, I don't know what derogatory (or at least racially insensitive) nicknames have been used in the Negro Leagues. -- Couillaud (talk) 02:18, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

They were not racially insensitive (for obvious reasons), but "funny" names, that obscured the fact that these were top professional athletes and among the best at playing baseball in the world, and not entertainers. Philippe (talk) 12:42, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
Weren't those types of names just as common with white players - ex. Dizzy Dean - Mischa (talk) 13:33, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
There seemed to be even more for Negro Leaguers, for some reason, and likely not because that's how the players themselves wished to be called. Philippe (talk) 14:32, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
