Talk:Brooklyn Robins
I would argue that the team was not known as the Robins until much later than 1914. In the period 1914-1922, the team was definitely known as the Dodgers, with occasional references to Robins. In the 1923-1926 period, Robins was starting be a 2nd name for the team, but it was still more commonly called the Dodgers. In the 1927-1931, especially the last 2 years period, it was known as the Robins, with Dodgers as a 2nd name. After Robinson left, they were the Dodgers. Jeff (talk) 06:42, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
Yes, it's complicated. There is an article on team names published in last Fall's Baseball Research Journal (by Ed Coen, details to be found in the further reading section of the teams article) that goes into this in detail. Neither of the names was official. In any case, we're following the lead of the main B-Ref site in calling them mainly Robins for the entire Uncle Robbie period. Complicated is fair. Its clear that they were definitely not called the Robins in 1914-1915. The problem is that using a name that plays off of the manager was rather common, even into the 50s, but if the team had an official name the nickname would stay just that. There was no change to the Robins, it was just gaining in use until it surpassed Dodgers somewhere around 1927. I just don't have a solution to offer. Almost anything we try to do 100 years after the fact will be arbitrary in some way. Jeff (talk) 14:10, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
