Biographical Information

Tal Abernathy pitched from 1942 to 1944 for the Philadelphia Athletics.

Abernathy was up in the majors in September 1942 after going 8-6 with a 2.61 ERA for the Wilmington Blue Rocks in the Inter-State League. He was back at Wilmington in 1943, going 16-10, and came up again to the A's, with an 0-3, 12.89 mark in his longest look of five games. Over parts of 1944-1947, he was with the Memphis Chickasaws of the Southern Association and came up to the majors for one final game in 1944. In 1948, Abernathy managed the Reidsville Luckies (Carolina League) and New Bern Bears (Coastal Plain League).

Tal, called both Tal and Ted, attended Elon University at the same time as Ed Sauer. He primarily wore number 37 during his career. He is, through 2019, one of four people named Abernathy who have come to the majors. Tal/Ted as well as the later Ted Abernathy and Woody Abernathy were all born in North Carolina, while the other Abernathy, Brent Abernathy, was born in Georgia.
