Biographical Information[edit]
Tennessee native Bill Nagel spent seventeen active seasons in various professional baseball parks from 1935 to 1951. In three of these years, he spent partial time with three major league teams.
He was with the Philadelphia Athletics for 105 games in 1939, hitting .252 with 12 home runs. He was also with the Philadelphia Phillies for 17 games in 1941. and hit just .143. Nagel finished up his major league work with the Chicago White Sox in 1945 with a .209 average in 67 games. This gave him big league career numbers of .227 with 15 homers in 189 games.
During his minor league run, Bill spent time in every league category available from D to AAA. He had only two seasons in the minor leagues that he hit .300 or better. The first came in 1944 with the Milwaukee Brewers of the American Association when he hit for a .308 average and also had 23 home runs. His second came with the Raleigh Capitals of the class C Carolina League in 1948 when he hit at a .313 clip along with 28 four-baggers. In 1940, he had led the International League with 37 homers while with the Baltimore Orioles. He managed Raleigh for part of 1948 and also managed the Reidsville Luckies briefly.
The all-around infielder suited up until 1951, when he was 35 years old, finishing out his last year in the pros with a .252 average and 19 homers for three different clubs. This gave him final stats in the minor leagues that showed a .273 batting average with 247 home runs while appearing in 1,871 games.
After baseball, and until his retirement, Nagel made his home in Freehold, NJ, where he worked and lived until his death at the age of 66, on October 8, 1981.
