Biographical Information[edit]

Takayuki Hata pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 9 years.

Hata was signed by the Nishitetsu Lions in 1956, and he was 7-4 with a 1.68 ERA in his rookie year despite his having a waist injury in July and missing the rest of the season. He then slumped to 2-4 with a 4.05 ERA in 1957, and he bounced back in 1958. Hata was 6-2 with a 2.46 ERA in 1958, and he appeared in the 1958 Nippon Series. He pitched a shutout inning in Game 1, then he allowed 3 runs in 2 innings in Game 2. The Lions beat the Yomiuri Giants in 7 games, and Hata won his first title. He only pitched 8 games in 1959 due to injuries.

The Oita native came back in 1960, and he was 11-15 with a 2.98 ERA. He ranked 4th in the Pacific League in appearances (52, tied with Tetsuya Yoneda), 3rd in strikeouts (219, between Shoichi Ono and Yoneda), 5th in losses (7 behind Masayuki Dobashi) and 8th in innings (between Kazuhisa Inao and Joe Stanka). Hata was also selected into the 1960 NPB All-Star Games, and he pitched 2 shutout innings with a strikeout (against Akira Owada) in Game 2. He was 13-11 with a 2.87 ERA in 1961, ranking 6th in ERA (between Takao Kajimoto and Takao Kajimoto) and 8th in strikeouts (166, between Kajimoto and Toshiaki Tokuhisa).

Hata slumped to 6.43 ERA in 9 games in 1962, then he bounced back in 1963. He had a 13-11 record with a 2.94 ERA, and he appeared in the 1963 Nippon Series. Hata pitched 1/3 of a shutout inning in Game 2, then he surrendered a RBI single to Isao Shibata in the 8th inning of Game 3. The Lions were beaten by the Giants in 7 games. Hata's ERA rose to 4.94 in 1964, then he jumped to the Chunichi Dragons in 1965. However, he stayed in the NPB Farm Leagues for the entire 1965 season, and he announced his retirement.

Overall, Hata was 56-50 with a 3.06 ERA, struck out 731 and pitched 1,002 innings in 9 years in NPB.
