Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Steve Spurgeon was a childhood friend of Dallas Braden when the two were growing up in Stockton, CA as they played on the same travel teams. But whereas Dallas was drafted in 2004, Steve had to sign as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago White Sox after completing college in 2006.
He pitched three seasons in the White Sox system, from 2006 to 2008, almost exclusively as a reliever - he made one start in exactly 100 appearances - going 8-7 with a 4.83 ERA but never reaching higher than the Class A Carolina League with the Winston-Salem Warthogs. After being released, he played two more seasons in the independent leagues. In 2009, he was with the Sioux City Explorers of the American Association and the Southern Illinois Miners of the Frontier League, going a combined 6-6, 5.02 in 24 games, including 15 as a starter. In 2010, he played for the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks of the Northern League and the Maui Na Koa Ikaika of the Golden Baseball League but was just 0-0, 6.27 in 9 games.
He married young broadcaster Jenny Cavnar and moved with her to Denver, CO when she got a job with the Colorado Rockies, her hometown team. There, he became a firefighter while his wife built her career, eventually being hired as the main television play-by-play announcer for the Oakland Athletics in 2024 where her partner was none other than Braden, who had remained a friend all those years and was a big advocate for Jenny's work.
