Steve Hammond pitched in the minor leagues and Taiwan.
Hammond was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 6th round of the 2005 amateur draft after going 1-3 with a 4.07 ERA as a college junior at Long Beach State. He was signed by scout Bruce Seid and made his pro debut that summer. Hammond pitched for three teams professionally in 2005 - the Helena Brewers (four games), the West Virginia Power (four games) and the Brevard County Manatees (eight games) - going a combined 5-3 with a 2.27 ERA in 16 games (10 starts). The following year, he pitched for the Manatees (14 starts) and Huntsville Stars (13 starts), going a combined 11-11 with a 2.72 ERA. He tied Yovani Gallardo, Dennis Sarfate and Carlos Villanueva for the most wins by a Brewers farmhand and tied Corey Thurman for the most losses. He was named the #7 prospect in the Brewers chain by Baseball America going into 2007. In 2007, he went 7-9 with a 4.69 ERA in 29 games (26 starts) for the Stars.
Hammond split the first part of 2008 between the Stars, going 7-4 with a 3.45 ERA with them, and the Nashville Sounds, going 0-4 with a 7.41 ERA. On July 20, he was traded with Darren Ford to the San Francisco Giants for Ray Durham. He pitched for the Fresno Grizzlies to wrap up the season, going 5-3 with a 5.63 ERA while on their staff. Overall, he went 12-11 with a 4.58 ERA in 28 games (27 starts) in 2008. With the Grizzlies in 2009, he went 11-12 with a 5.73 ERA in 29 games (28 starts).
He began 2010 with the Camden Riversharks of the independent Atlantic League and went 7-5 with a 2.71 ERA in 15 starts. In July, he signed with the La New Bears in Taiwan. He had a 2-1, 3.07 record in six starts for them. In 2011, he played briefly for the Lancaster Barnstormers, posting a 0.00 ERA in two starts. After not playing in 2012 or 2013, Hammond returned to pro ball for 2014, going 10-8 with a 3.30 ERA in 27 starts for the Sugar Land Skeeters. He last played for the Bravos de Margarita of the Venezuelan Winter League in 2014-15.
