Biographical Information

Sterling Slaughter pitched 20 games in the big leagues for the Chicago Cubs at the age of 22 in 1964. It is said he had arm troubles that year that cut short his career.

He played in Canada for three teams in 1960 and 1961. It was common for college players to appear on the Canadian teams at the time.

He was a first-team All-American pitcher in 1963 at Arizona State University and was the first player to be signed from what has become a very strong program at Arizona State University. He played with the Amarillo Gold Sox and then came to the majors in 1964, going 10-7 with a 3.00 ERA. He had one complete game in his major league career. It was on June 5th against the Milwaukee Braves. He gave up 6 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), walked 3 and struck out 8. He was 1 for 4 at the plate, getting his only career hit, a single coming off of Hank Fischer. The Cubs won the game, 5-2.

From 1965 to 1967 he pitched with the Salt Lake City Bees (0-2, 4.80 in 1965), the Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs (15-8, 2.87 in 1965; 2-8, 3.91 in 1966 and 4-8, 3.75 in 1967), and the Tacoma Cubs (2-5, 3.93 in 1966). He tied for second in the Texas League in wins in 1965, 4 behind leader Ken Dixon.

He is in the Arizona State University Hall of Fame.
