Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Stephen Johnson was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 6th round of the 2012 amateur draft. The scout was Todd Thomas. He made his professional debut that season with the AZL Giants and also pitched for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes of the Northwest League before the year was out. Altogether, he was 0-2, 4.64 in 19 relief appearances with 2 saves and 21 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings. In 2013, he spent the entire season with the Augusta GreenJackets of the South Atlantic League, going 5-1, 3.61 in 45 games. he saved 8 games and struck out 71 in 52 1/3 innings. In 2014, he was 7-4, 3.65 with 1 save in 49 games for the San Jose Giants of the California League. Once again, he put up solid strikeout numbers, with 77 Ks in 69 innings.

The Giants assigned Stephen to the AA Richmond Flying Squirrels to start the 2015 season. In his customary relief role, he pitched 44 times, going 3-0, 3.41. On August 20th, he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in return for major league outfielder Marlon Byrd.
