Sport (magazine)

Sport (often written in all-caps as SPORT) was an American magazine that was published from 1946 until 2000. It was the pre-eminent sports magazine in the country from the time of its launch until the early 1960s, when it was eclipsed by Sports Illustrated. Contrary to another publication such as The Sporting News which was printed on newsprint and concentrated its coverage on game results and statistics, Sport was a glossy magazine with color photographs and was more interested in the human stories of athletes and the drama associated with sports.

Sport had a close relationship with Major League Baseball. New York Yankees icon Joe DiMaggio graced the cover of its inaugural issue in September 1946. It sponsored a number of awards, such as the World Series Most Valuable Player Award, which started in 1955 and various All-Star teams, such as those that were depicted on Topps All-Star cards starting in the mid-1950s.

Writers for the magazine included famous names such as Grantland Rice, John Lardner, Ed Linn and Roger Kahn.
