Biographical Information

Spencer Jones has pitched as high as AAA and for the USA national team.

Jones had a 2-3, 2.78 record as a junior college freshman and made All-Bay Valley Conference. as a sophomore He was 4-6 with a 2.89 ERA as a junior after transferring to Washington, then was 6-2 with a save and a 4.14 ERA as a senior. He pitched 32 games, 2nd in the Pac-12 Conference behind Greg Minier. The Tampa Bay Rays took him in the 10th round of the 2016 amateur draft; the scout was Paul Kirsch.

He made his pro debut with the Hudson Valley Renegades and fared well at 3-0, 2.67 with a save. He struck out 36 and had a 1.04 WHIP in 33 2/3 IP. In 2017, he was with the Bowling Green Hot Rods (0-3, 4 Sv, 3.47, 44K in 36 1/3 IP) and Charlotte Stone Crabs (2-1, Sv, 1.71 in 18 G). With the Surprise Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League, though, he had a 8.03 ERA in nine outings.

Jones split 2018 between Charlotte (4-2, 3 Sv, 2.31 in 26 G, 9 BB in 46 2/3 IP) and the Montgomery Biscuits (1-1, 4.11 in 10 G). He was let go by the Rays and picked up by the independent St. Paul Saints, going 1-0 with a 1.34 ERA in 7 games. That earned him a deal with the Acereros de Monclova, for whom he had a 3-1, 5.75 record.

He was a late addition to the US team for the 2019 Premier 12, replacing Tyler Johnson. Despite his late-coming, he wound up one of the top pitchers on a team with several MLB veterans and several prospects. He debuted in a loss to Mexico, replacing J.P. Feyereisen in the 8th with a 8-2 deficit, two on and two out. He struck out Juan Pérez to end that threat, then went 1-2-3 in the 9th by fanning Esteban Quiroz and Christian Villanueva before Jorge Flores flew out. In the US win over Japan (the champs' only loss), he took over for Caleb Thielbar in the 8th with a 4-2 lead and a man on 2nd. He retired Nobuhiro Matsuda but Hideto Asamura singled to make it a one-run game. Jones whiffed Hayato Sakamoto and got Tsubasa Aizawa on a fly. Brandon Dickson closed it out. Finally, against Taiwan, he relieved Wyatt Mills in the 7th with a 2-1 deficit. He again had the Ks going, fanning Chun-Hsiu Chen and Yen-Wen Kuo before Wei-Chen Wang flew out. The US scored two in the bottom of the inning, giving Jones the win when Noah Song and Dickson finished it off. He joined Song, Brooks Pounders and Clayton Andrews in posting 0.00 ERAs for the US but the team did not get the 2020 Olympics spot up for grabs, which Mexico claimed.
