In July, 2009, Simon Fraser University was approved as the first non-American school to compete in the NCAA. The school was allowed to compete in Division-II in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference starting in 2011-2012. SFU does not compete in baseball, but the announcement prompted the University of British Columbia, which does compete in baseball, to explore the same transition.
