Biographical Information[edit]
Si-hyun Son is a shortstop who has played in the Korea Baseball Organization and for the South Korean national team.
Son debuted in the KBO with the 2003 Doosan Bears, hitting .220/.257/.270 in 59 games. The next year, he batted .231/.298/.317 for Doosan. In 2005, Son produced at a .276/.352/.373 and won a KBO Gold Glove as the best overall shortstop in the league.
Son remained effective in 2006, hitting .267/~.341/.342 for Doosan and playing in the All-Star Game. Through 2006, his batting line was .255/~.327/.337 in 433 games.
Son was then caught for having dodged military service, a somewhat common scandal for South Korean athletes (see Jin-ho Cho for one of many other examples). He did not play in the KBO in 2007 but was with the Korean Army team for the 2007 Baseball World Cup, where he did very well. He batted .417/.452/.583 with 11 runs and 9 RBI in 10 games. He was second to Trent Oeltjen in the tournament in runs scored, one shy of the lead. He scored South Korea's only run in a 2-1 defeat to Australia but hit into a 9th-inning double play by Brad Harman. In the 5th/6th place game, also against Australia, he hit the decisive three-run triple off of Adam Bright in a 5-2 win. He made the tourney All-Star team at shortstop, beating out Kevin Nicholson and Brett Willemburg among other top performers in the event. He was the only South Korean player selected.
Son made the Korean "A" national team for the 2008 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament, going 1 for 4 with 2 runs and two errors in 14 innings at shortstop, spelling the not-fully-healthy Jin-man Park at the position. South Korea clinched a spot in the 2008 Olympics with their performance. Son hit .267/~.341/.342 in 2008 for Doosan.
For the Bears in '09, Son batted .289/.369/.437 and won a second Gold Glove.
