Biographical Information

Utility man Shozo Etoh played 464 games in Nippon Pro Baseball and later coached. He is the brother of the far more famous Shinichi Etoh.

Shozo Etoh was on the Japanese national team that won the 1965 Asian Championship. He was a third-round draft pick of the Yomiuri Giants in 1965 NPB draft. He debuted with them in 1966, going 3 for 23. He appeared in just three games the next two years. In 1969, Etoh hit .250/.300/.464 in 34 games for the Chunichi Dragons. He had another decent season for a bench player in 1970, batting .277/.309/.354 in 34 games. His time and production picked up in 1971 as he hit .274/.330/.381 in 58 games and 84 AB. Etoh had his best season in contact and OBP terms in 1972, batting .306/.374/.398 in 125 plate appearances over 77 games. The Dragons sub hit .276/.338/.386 in 84 games (139 appearances) in 1973. In 1974, he hit .261/.320/.319 in 78 contests. Etoh hit .279/.357/.393 in 1975. He was 0 for 9 in 1976. Etoh hit .267/.323/.362 in 653 career plate appearances over 464 games. He then became a coach with the Yokohama BayStars, Yomiuri and Lotte Orions then was head coach of Keio University. As of 2010, he was the only active Tokyo Big Six University League head coach with NPB playing experience.
