Biographical Information

Shinya Oda pitched nine seasons for the Seibu Lions.

Oda pitched for Kyoto Daimaru in the industrial leagues. When the team dissolved, he was picked by Seibu in the third round in the 1981 NPB draft. He debuted in 1984, allowing six runs in 7 2/3 IP over 3 games. He pitched four games in 1985, yielding four runs in five innings.

Oda pitched 28 2/3 IP over 35 games as a LOOGY in 1986, going 2-1 with a save and a 3.45 ERA. He worked 15 2/3 IP in 23 games in 1987, going 0-3 with a 5.17 ERA. He pitched two shutout innings in the 1987 Japan Series, which the Lions won.

Shinya pitched in 41 games and 33 2/3 IP in 1988, going 1-1 with five saves and a 3.48 ERA. He retired the only batter he faced in the 1988 Japan Series, again won by Seibu. He pitched only 10 innings in 25 games in 1989, going 0-1 with a save and a 9.90 ERA with 19 hits in 53 batters faced. He had a similar usage rate in 1990 with 22 games and 10 innings (allowing 10 runs).

Oda pitched 20 2/3 IP over 33 games in 1991, going 1-0 with a save and a 1.31 ERA in his best season. He retired all five batters he faced in the 1991 Japan Series as Seibu won another Japan Series title. Oda wrapped up with 2 runs in 8 innings in 1992. He pitched two games in the 1992 Japan Series - as a true LOOGY, he faced just one batter in each and retired each of them.

Oda was 4-6 with 9 saves and a 4.39 ERA in 196 career games, totaling only 139 1/3 IP, less than a starting pitcher gets in a single season. He opened a restaurant after his baseball career ended.
