Shinya Matsuyama has pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball.
Matsuyama was drafted by the Chunichi Dragons in the first round of the development phase of the 2022 NPB draft, and he soon joined the rotation in in his rookie year. He notched 17 holds in 36 appearances, and he even had a 19-game scoreless streak.[1] He finished 4th in 2023 Central League Rookie of the Year Award voting. [2] Matsuyama attended the 2024 NPB All-Star Games. He pitched in Game 1, when he relieved Katsuki Azuma in the 6th inning. He walked Ariel Martinez, allowed a hit to Daigo Kamikawabata and forced Hiromi Oka to ground into a double play. Ukyo Shuto then added a RBI hit, and Matsuyama retired Hotaka Yamakawa to end his work. Kohei Morihara took over. [3]
Matsuyama's repertoire features a fastball that peaks at 96.9 mph, a forkball, curveball and a cutter.
