Biographical Information[edit]

Shinsuke Saito was one of the stars of the 2005 Baseball World Cup. His fastball peaks at 92.5 mph and he also throws a slider.

While in the industrial leagues, Saito pitched for Japan in the 2005 Asian Championship. In the 2005 Baseball World Cup, he went 3-0 with a 0.82 ERA, beating Spain's Alberto Magallón, Nicaragua's Julio Ráudez and Puerto Rico's Josue Matos. He tied Yulieski González and Diegomar Markwell for the tourney lead in wins. He fanned 24 in 22 innings, tying Won-sam Jang for 4th in the Cup in strikeouts, trailing Dae-sung Choi, Pedro Luis Lazo and Dany Betancourt. Lazo made the All-Tournament team ahead of Saito.

The Chunichi Dragons took Saito in the 6th round of the 2005 NPB draft. He debuted with Chunichi in 2006, tossing one scoreless inning and allowing two hits. After a year in ni-gun, he returned for 17 games in 2008, going 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA.
