Biographical Information[edit]

Shigetaka Nishio pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 10 years.

Nishio was signed by the Osaka Tigers in 1954, and he only pitched two games in his rookie year. He had a 3.72 ERA in 13 appearances in 1955, then he had a 3-3 record with a 2.80 ERA in 1956. Nishio's ERA rose to 4.62 in 1957, then he bounced back in 1958. He was 11-10 with a 2.71 ERA in 1958, and that was the only 10-win season in his career. Nishio slumped to 8-9 with a 3.41 ERA in 1959, and he had a 2.30 ERA in 32 games in 1960. The Tigers traded him with Shintoku Hoshiyama to the Chunichi Dragons for Tsutomu Ina and Yokochi Yoshimatsu after the 1960 season.

The Kyoto native was selected into the 1961 NPB All-Star Games, but he didn't appear in either of the games. He ended up 6-5 with a 3.09 ERA in 1961, then he was moved from the rotation. Nishio's ERA was 3.00 in 22 relief outings in 1962, then he pitched 25 games with the same ERA in 1963. He had a 2.88 ERA in 17 games in 1964, then he lowered his ERA to 1.35 in 25 games in 1965. Nishio announced his retirement after the 1965 season. He passed away due to kidney failure in 2017.

Overall, Nishio was 39-40 with a 2.99 ERA, struck out 415 and pitched 817 1/3 innings in 10 years in NPB.
