Biographical Information[edit]

Shigeru Kaga was MVP of his college league as a senior. He then played for Sumitomo Kinzoku Kashima in the industrial leagues. The Yokohama BayStars took him in the second round of the 2009 NPB draft.

Kaga debuted in Nippon Pro Baseball on March 26, relieving Stephen Randolph with a 5-0 deficit in the fifth and throwing a 1/3 shutout innings against the Hanshin Tigers. He finished the 2010 season 3-12 with a 3.66 ERA. Opponents hit .291 against him, but he walked only 28 in 145 innings. He was 10th in the Central League in ERA, second in losses (one behind Dicky Gonzalez) and 8th in hits allowed (165) as a mainstay of the rotation on the cellar-dwelling BayStars. He got three votes for the 2010 Central League Rookie of the Year Award, putting him fourth behind Hisayoshi Chono, Naomichi Donoue and Takumi Akiyama.

Kaga throws sidearm and rarely hits 90 on the radar gun.
