Biographical Information

Infielder Shed Long, also known as Shed Long Jr., was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 12th round of the 2013 amateur draft, out of a high school in Alabama. He played six seasons in the Reds' organization, starting off with the AZL Reds in 2013. He was a catcher his first two seasons but moved to second base in 2015. He had his first very good season in 2016, when he hit a combined .293/.371/.471 in 1321 games between the Dayton Dragons of the Midwest League and the Daytona Tortugas of the Florida State League, adding 30 doubles. 5 triples and 15 homers. In 2017, he started off at Daytona and earned a mid-season promotion to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos of the Southern League, combining to hit .281/.358/.477 with 22 doubles and 16 homers. In 2018 he played 126 games for Pensacola and hit .261 with 22 doubles and 12 homers.

On January 21, 2019, he was traded twice in one day, first going to the New York Yankees as part of the deal that landed the Reds veteran major leagues starter Sonny Gray, and then being flipped to the Seattle Mariners for OF Josh Stowers.

On June 20, 2021, he hit a walk-off grand slam off Diego Castillo of the Tampa Bay Rays in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 6-2 Mariners win.

His father, also named Shed Long and informally known as "Big Shed", played college football at Auburn University. However, "Little Shed"'s preference from the beginning was always baseball, and he was extremely precocious.
