Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Shae Simmons was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 22nd round of the 2012 amateur draft out of Southwest Missouri State University. In spite of his relatively low draft status, he made it to the major leagues quickly, making his debut with the Braves on May 31, 2014, less than two years after being drafted.
In his first big league season, he pitched 26 times, all in relief, putting up a 2.91 ERA in 21 2/3 innings. His record was 1-2 with a save and he struck out 23 batters while allowing only 15 hits. However, his season ended in late July because of elbow issues, and as rest failed to improve things, he underwent Tommy John surgery in February of 2015, wiping out the entire season before it started. He came back in 2016, spending time with three minor league teams before returning to the big leagues in September. After a couple of warm-up stints in the low minors, he pitched well for the AAA Gwinnett Braves, with a 1.50 ERA in 12 games before moving up to Atlanta when rosters expanded. He made 7 appearances in the Show, giving up only 1 run in 6 2/3 innings.
On January 11, 2017, he was traded to the Seattle Mariners along with OF Mallex Smith in return for two Class A pitching prospects, Luiz Gohara and Thomas Burrows.
