Biographical Information[edit]

Sergio Velis has pitched in the minors and for the Venezuelan national team.

Velis was signed by Philadelphia Phillies scout Jesús Méndez in October 2011. [1] He was 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA for the 2012 VSL Phillies for a fine pro debut. He fell to 2-7, 4.35 in a return engagement with the team, second to future major leaguer José Alvarado in the Venezuelan Summer League in losses. He rebounded to 4-1, 2.05 with a save for the 2014 VSL Phillies, He was 8th in the VSL in K (43). In 2015, his fourth season with the VSL Phillies, he had a 4-2, 1.33 record with a .86 WHIP. He led the league in ERA (.64 ahead of Gustavo Armas) and led in K (59, 4 ahead of Armas). [2] Despite all that, he never got a look beyond the VSL, having had a 2.39 ERA in the minors.

He resurfaced with the Tigres de Aragua in the 2021-2022 Venezuelan Winter League, allowing five runs in five innings. He was on Venezuela's team for the 2023 Pan American Games and started their opener but lost to Felipe Natel and Brazil as he allowed four hits and three runs (one earned) in 1 2/3 IP, though he struck out three; Wuilder Rodríguez took over but the damage had been done.
