Biographical Information[edit]

Sergio Mendez has played, coached and managed in the minors.

Signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates, Sergio hit .269/.278/.288 in 15 games for the 1992 DSL Pirates. The next year, he batted .248/.272/.298 for the Welland Pirates, with 15 passed balls in 32 games behind the plate. In 1994, Mendez improved to .274/.303/.396 as the primary catcher for the Augusta GreenJackets. He hit .246/.280/.403 for the 1995 Lynchburg Hillcats, with eight homers in 236 AB. He split 1996 between Augusta (.233/.290/.407) and Lynchburg (.277/.310/.445), setting career highs in runs (42), doubles (18), home runs (11), RBI (43) and walks (15).

The Rio San Juan native was with Lynchburg (.141/.179/.266 in 17 G) and the AA Carolina Mudcats (.233/.278/.356 in 49 G) in 1997. He ended his playing career with the independent Sioux Falls Canaries in 1998, hitting .239.

Mendez was manager of the DSL Nationals from 2005-2007. He went 49-15 in 2007, becoming the first Nationals farm system manager to guide his team to a title. He won Dominican Summer League Manager of the Year honors. He coached for the Hagerstown Suns in 2009 and GCL Nationals in 2010-2011. Mendez returned to the DSL with the DSL Diamondbacks as batting coach in 2012, manager in 2013 and coach again in 2014. He then managed the DSL Dodgers 1 in 2016 and coached the DSL Dodgers 2 in 2017-2019 and DSL Dodgers Bautista in 2021-2024.
