Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Sergio Beltre played in the New York Mets system from 1976 to 1983 and the California Angels system in 1983. He also spent at least a part of a year (1982) in the Mexican League. He began his professional career at 17 years old.

After hitting no better than .250 in a season from 1976 to 1979, he batted .311/.396/.453 for the Double-A Jackson Mets in 1980, albeit in 45 games. He reached Triple-A for the first time in 1981, hitting .177/.240/.279 in 51 games for the Tidewater Tides in his first taste at that level. He returned briefly to the Tides in 1982.

Though he wasn't a power hitter, Beltre did exhibit decent speed, stealing as many as 21 bases in a season. Overall, he batted .245/.319/.352 with 35 home runs, 288 RBI and 82 stolen bases in 8 seasons.

He later became a scout for the Houston Astros, signing Jorge De Leon and Jhon Florentino.
