Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Jhon Florentino played in the Houston Astros minor league system from 2005 to 2010. He was signed by the club as a non-drafted free agent on April 19, 2003. The scout was Sergio Beltre.
Not an offensively inclined player, Florentino batted .246/.293/.379 and .221/.282/.347 his first two seasons, respectively, before reaching highs of .290/.331/.396 in 117 games for the Salem Avalanche in 2008. He hit .357/.438/.571 in 11 games with the Dominican Gigantes del Cibao over that winter. He briefly returned to the Gigantes in 2009, as well.
Showing occasional speed - he stole as many as 14 bases in a season - Florentino was consistent with his home run output, hitting four home runs each year during his first four seasons and then five home runs in his final two campaigns, respectively. As a whole, he batted .261/.314/.374 with 26 home runs, 229 RBI and 39 stolen bases over 527 minor league games. In winter ball, he batted .333/.400/.500 in 18 at-bats.
He was a Texas League Mid-Season All-Star with the Corpus Christi Hooks in 2009.
He died January 31, 2015 at 31 years old.
