Biographical Information[edit]

Starting pitcher Sean Murphy played in the Oakland Athletics from 2010 to 2014, briefly reaching Triple-A for the only time in his final campaign. He was taken by the club in the 33rd round of the 2010 amateur draft, a few picks ahead of pitcher Matt Stites. He was signed by scout Marc Sauer.

In his first professional campaign, he went 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA in 14 relief appearances for the AZL Athletics; in 21 innings, he had 32 strikeouts. After a down 2011, he fully transitioned to the rotation for 2012 and went 11-12 with a 3.91 ERA in 27 starts. He averaged exactly one strikeout per inning and posted a solid 1.164 WHIP, allowing just 133 hits and 52 walks in 159 frames. He followed that with a 10-9, 3.94 line in 28 games (27 starts) in 2013. He reached Triple-A for the only time in 2014, going 2-4 with a 7.18 ERA in 7 starts for the Sacramento River Cats; he was 6-8, 4.89 in 20 starts overall.

Murphy went 32-32 with a 4.26 ERA in 105 games (81 starts) in his career. In 490 2/3 innings, he allowed 486 hits and 167 walks (1.331 WHIP), while striking out 462 batters.

He died on April 25, 2016 at 27 years old from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the heart muscle. He was still in the Athletics system when he passed away.
