Biographical Information[edit]

Scott Wiegandt played in AAA for six years but never made the major leagues.

Wiegandt was taken by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 45th round of the 1989 amateur draft, not an auspicious beginning to his pro career. The left-hander struck out 47 in 45 2/3 innings that year for the Martinsville Phillies, with a 2-5, 2.56 record. Had he qualified, he would have been 10th in the Appalachian League in ERA. He split 1990 between the Spartanburg Phillies (2-0, 2 Sv, 2 R in 18 1/3 IP) and Clearwater Phillies (4-8, 4 Sv, 2.63). He had another two-team stint in 1991, with Clearwater (0-1, Sv, 3.48) and the Reading Phillies (2-3, Sv, 2.67). He had the best ERA of any Reading hurler with 30+ games, edging closer Toby Borland.

In 1992, Scott pitched for both Reading (6-3, 2 Sv, 2.98) and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons (1 shutout inning). He led Reading with 56 games pitched and had the best ERA of any of their regular relievers. Despite two fine years at AA, the Bellarmine alumnus was sent back to Reading in 1993 and again performed well (6-2, 3.56) though he did walk 44 in 73 1/3 innings, a major issue. Wiegandt split 1994 between his usual haunt at Reading (2-4, 3.10) and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (8 R in 4 2/3 IP).

By 1995, his 7th season, Scott was finally at AAA for good. He did well in two full years with the Red Barons but did not get called up to the majors. In 1995, he was 1-3 with two saves and a 2.98 ERA in 47 outings. The next year, he was 5-6 with 2 saves and a 2.71 ERA in 46 contests. He spent his last two years in other organizations. In 1997, he was 1-3 with a 4.45 ERA in 40 games for the St. Louis Cardinals' Louisville Redbirds affiliate. He wrapped up in '98 with the Pittsburgh Pirates' Nashville Sounds, allowing 10 runs and 9 walks in 11 1/3 innings and going 0-1.

Overall, Wiegandt was 31-39 with 14 saves and a 3.15 ERA in 426 minor league games.

After his playing career ended, Wiegandt coached at Holy Cross High School. From 2001-2004, he was head coach at Bellarmine, his alma mater. He was then promoted to athletics director.
