Biographical Information[edit]
Sarah Hudek was a key player for Team USA's women team. Her father John Hudek was a MLB All-Star pitcher.
Hudek was 1-1 with a save and a 0.54 ERA in the 2014 Women's Baseball World Cup, allowing five hits and one walk in 13 innings while fanning eight. She tossed five shutout innings in a win over Taiwan (Clarisa Navarro finished it up) then saved Navarro's 3-1 win over Australia (in which Hudek also scored a run while playing right field) later in the tournament. She got the start in the Gold Medal game and lost a 3-0 duel to Japan's Ayami Sato (two of the three runs being unearned) and had two of the US's four hits. For the tournament, she went 6 for 12 with 3 walks, a triple, two runs and a RBI. She had the best ERA of any hurler to allow an earned run in the event, was 5th in opponent average and also tied for first in both triples and saves. She was second in IP, tied Loes Asmus for third in whiffs (two behind Sato) and tied for first with three pick-offs. She was named the event's All-Star relief pitcher.
Playing for her high school, she was 1-0 with one run, 8 hits and 5 walks in 8 innings as a senior, fanning 11. With a fastball peaking at 82 mph, she was offered a scholarship to Bossier Parish Community College. Only three prior women had been given even partial scholarships for college baseball in the US - Marti Sementelli, Molly McKesson and Ila Borders. She was picked for the US roster for the 2015 Pan American Games, the first Pan American Games to feature womens' baseball. She started and won the opener over Venezuela's Kerlys Pérez, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) in 5 innings; Stacy Piagno took over. She saved a 3-1 win over rival Canada, retiring Bradi Wall, Stéphanie Savoie and Amanda Asay after relieving Kelsie Whitmore with the potential tying run on second. She started the Gold Medal Game against Canada but struggled (3 1/3 IP, 5 H, 5 BB, 2 K, 3 R, 3 ER) before Piagno took over and got the win. She also played right field in the event, hitting .357/.389/.572 with 5 runs and 5 RBI in 5 games. On the mound, she was 1-0 with a save and a 3.75 ERA. She tied Jessica Bérubé for second in the event in strikeouts (2 behind Piago). She tied Michelle Snyder for 7th in slugging, tied Kiara Irizarry for 5th in RBI and tied for 6th in runs.
She was 2-1 with a 4.95 ERA as a freshman at Bossier Parish but then switched to softball while transferring to Texas A&M.
