Biographical information[edit]

Santo Maertz played in the minor leagues from 2008 to 2010.

Prior to playing professionally, he played for Saint Peter's College for four seasons, from 2005 to 2008. In 2005, he went 1-10 with a 9.00 ERA in 11 games (10 starts). He struggled again in 2006, this time posting a 1-4 record and a 10.26 ERA in nine games, six of which were starts. Maertz improved drastically in 2007, posting an ERA of 3.59 and a record of 4-2, but he struggled again in 2008, going 1-7 with a 6.48 ERA.

Despite struggling throughout his college career, Maertz was drafted by the Cardinals in the 44th round of the 2008 amateur draft and was signed by scout Koby Perez. He began his professional career that season with the Johnson City Cardinals, going 4-0 with a 3.15 ERA in 17 appearances. In 20 innings of work, he struck out 25 batters. He went 3-1 with a 1.45 ERA in 26 games for the Batavia Muckdogs in 2009. He played for the independent Brockton Rox and Grand Prairie AirHogs in 2010, going 0-4 with a 6.29 ERA in 16 games.

Overall, Maertz was 7-5 with a 3.46 ERA in 59 relief appearances. In 75 1/3 innings, he had 82 strikeouts.
