Biographical information[edit]

Ryan Wehrle is a minor league shortstop.

Nebraska[edit]

Ryan played at Nebraska for 3 years. As a freshman in 2005, he played second base switching starts with Jake Opitz and was Joe Simokaitis' backup at shortstop. He played in 57 games hitting .275/.377/.329 with 25 RBI's and 26 runs. He had 2 multi-RBI games in the 2005 College World Series. Ryan had a great sophomore year hitting .367/.447/.580 with 8 home runs, amd 48 RBIs in 57 games. He led the team with 29 multi-hit games and led the team in 5 hitting categories: hits (83), runs (50), doubles (22), walks (28), and on-base % (.447). He went 14-14 in stolen bases and reached safely in 52 of the games. He moved to shortstop permanently after Simokaitis graduated and Jake Opitz took over second base permanently. He became the first Husker shortstop since 1985 to earn first-team All-Big Twelve Conference honors. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 18th round of the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft. He had knee surgery in the fall putting him behind from 2006. In his junior year he played in only 43 games before being dismissed from the team on May 4th after having unspecified personal issues. Wehrle had been given a DUI as a freshman. He had hit .241/.359/.321 with 3 home runs, 18 RBI's and went 6-6 in stolen bases in his junior year. He was drafted in the 20th round by the New York Yankees in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft.

Minor League[edit]

Ryan made his minor league debut on June 19, 2007. He split the year between the GCL Yankees and Staten Island Yankees, hitting a combined .235 in 49 games.

He played for the independent River City Rascals in 2008 and 2009, hitting .267 in 66 games in 2008 and .317 in 75 games in 2009.
