Biographical Information[edit]
The Seattle Mariners drafted Jake Opitz in the 39th round of the 2004 amateur draft from Heritage High School, but he opted to attend the University of Nebraska instead. Four years later the Chicago Cubs drafted Opitz in the 12th round of the 2008 amateur draft and he played in their minor league system from 2008-2011. Opitz spend his final season in affiliated ball playing at the upper levels of the Philadelphia Phillies organization. Overall he hit .244 with a .312 OBP and a slugging percentage of .358 in 356 minor league games. Opitz continued his playing career in the independent leagues before retiring as a player following the 2015 season.
After his playing career ended, Opitz moved into coaching as the 2016 hitting coach for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. In 2017 he joined the Colorado Rockies organization as a coach for the Hartford Yard Goats before moving into a managerial role in 2018. He was scheduled to return to Grand Junction in 2020 before COVID-19 shut down the minor league season.
Jake is the older brother of Shane Opitz and Casey Opitz who also played professionally.
