Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Ryan Cusick was the first round selection of the Atlanta Braves in the 2021 amateur draft, with the 24th overall pick out of Wake Forest University. In the 2018 amateur draft, he had been taken in the 40th round by the Cincinnati Reds coming out of high school, but had decided to go on to college. In three seasons at Wake Forest, he had gone a combined 10-10 in 35 games, while being limited to just 4 starts in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic had shut down the season prematurely. He had done well in summer collegiate baseball, posting a 1.14 ERA in the Coastal Plain League in 2020.
After being drafted, he played for the Augusta GreenJackets in 2021, making 6 starts but lasting only 16 1/3 innings as the Braves did not want to overuse him. Before the 2022 season, on March 14th, he was involved in a major trade, heading to the Oakland Athletics alongside fellow prospects Shea Langeliers, Joey Estes and Cristian Pache in return for 1B Matt Olson. He made only 13 appearances that season, due to an injury that cost him most of August, going 1-6, 7.12 mainly with the Midland RockHounds of the Texas League. He then played in the Arizona Fall League after the season. He did much better in 2023, going 5-7, 4.77 in 22 starts for Midland, and was also called to make on start in AAA with the Las Vegas Aviators of the Pacific Coast League. He also made a rehabilitation start back in the Arizona Complex League, and overall pitched a total of 100 innings, more than double his total from the previous season.
