Biographical Information

Rudy Pena reached AA as a player then became a coach. He is a nephew of Tony Pena, the cousin of Tony Pena Jr. and Francisco Peña and either the son or nephew of Ramon Pena.

Pena signed with the Boston Red Sox in 1996. He hit just .159 in his pro debut that year, with the DSL Astros/Red Sox. In '97, he batted .306/.372/.363 for the GCL Red Sox. He had 348 putouts, leading Gulf Coast League backstops. He hit .349/.375/.458 in 24 games for the 1998 GCL Red Sox and .229/.289/.400 in 15 for the Lowell Spinners. During 1999, Rudy set career highs in games (99), runs (35), doubles (15) and RBI (37) while putting up a .238/.288/.319 line for the Augusta GreenJackets. He fielded .993, leading South Atlantic League backstops.

Pena spent both 2000 and 2001 with the Sarasota Red Sox, hitting .194/.270/.235 the first year and .237/.286/.288 the next. Let go by Boston, he produced at a .220/.276/.232 for the independent Pennsylvania Road Warriors in 2002. He was then picked up by another of his uncle's former organizations, the Pittsburgh Pirates. Rudy saw scant action with the 2003 Hickory Crawdads (1 for 11) and Lynchburg Hillcats (4 for 30, 2 2B, BB, 1 scoreless inning pitched). He spent 2004 with Lynchburg (.171/.197/.236) and the Altoona Curve (2 for 4), then went 8 for 26 with a double and homer for the 2005 Hillcats to end his playing career.

Pena coached for Hickory in 2008, GCL Pirates in 2009-2011, Bradenton Marauders in 2012, and Indianapolis Indians in 2014.
