Biographical Information[edit]

Rudy Meoli was the heir apparent to Jim Fregosi as the California Angels' shortstop in the 1970s. After Leo Cardenas filled in for a year, Meoli was given the starting job in 1973. He responded by hitting only .223. With other promising shortstops in their system, such as Orlando Ramirez and Mike Miley, Meoli was traded to the San Diego Padres after the 1975 season. Meoli bounced around the minors until he was acquired by the Chicago Cubs in 1978. Used sparingly as a utility player, he hit only .103. He ended his career in a utility role with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1979.
