Biographical Information

Roy Henshaw has the most victories of any major league pitcher out of the University of Chicago (through 2007). Born in Chicago, IL he pitched for the University in 1931 and 1932. Henshaw signed with the Chicago Cubs on September 26, 1932, for the 1933 season. He made his major league debut at age 21 on April 15th, when he pitched an inning of relief in the Cubs' extra-inning loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Henshaw's best year was when he went 13-5 on the pennant-winning 1935 Cubs team and pitched in the 1935 World Series.

He was traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1937 in the Leo Durocher deal, and spent a year with Brooklyn and a year with the St. Louis Cardinals before later finishing out his career with the Detroit Tigers during the war years from 1942 to 1944.

He was in the minors in 1934 with the Los Angeles Angels who won 137 games. He went 16-4 for them.

He was an All-American in 1931 while in college although the sources do not specify which organization named him as an All-American.

He was a war plant worker during World War II, receiving a draft deferment because he was his family's sole support.
