Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Ron Shoop was with the Detroit Tigers briefly in 1959 appearing in 3 games, with his only major league base hit in 7 at-bats coming against Hall of Famer Early Wynn. Shoop had been signed as an amateur free agent by the by the Tigers before the 1951 season. He spent two years in the minors (1951-1952) before being called up for service with the United States Military for two years (1953-1954) during the Korean War.
After returning from military service, Ron spent four more seasons in the minors, having his best year in 1958 with the Lancaster Red Roses of the Eastern League, appearing in 117 games and hitting a career-high .259. After his short stint with the Tigers in 1959, Ron spent four more seasons in the minors with average success, ending his ten-season minor league run with the Albuquerque Dukes of the Texas League in 1962.
Shoop appeared in 772 games with 14 different teams with a career batting average of .233 and 23 home runs during his minor league career.
After baseball, Shoop returned to his native Rural Valley, PA and was a long-time employee of the Pittsburgh Brewing Company until his retirement. Shoop died at the age of 72 on March 14, 2003.
