Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Robby Snelling was selected 39th overall by the San Diego Padres with a Competitive Balance Round A pick in the supplemental 1st round of the 2022 amateur draft. He was coming out of a high school in his birth city of Reno, NV.

He made his professional debut in 2023, appearing for three different teams in the Padres' organization: the Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League for 11 games; the Fort Wayne Wizards of the Midwest League for 7 games; and the San Antonio Missions of the Texas League for 2 games. It was highly unusual for a high school pitcher to reach AA that quickly, but Robby had such success in the lower classifications, including being named the Cal League Pitcher of the Year and a post-season All-Star after going 5-1, 1.57, that the move was warranted. He responded by being named the Texas League Pitcher of the Week for the week of September 3rd, while going 2-0, 1.56 in 4 starts against much older competition. His overall record was 11-3, 1.82 in 22 games - all starts - with 118 strikeouts in 103 2/3 innings. After the season, in addition to the California League honors already mentioned, he was named a minor league All-Star by Baseball America and its Minor League Pitcher of the Year.

He started the 2024 season ranked the #27 overall prospect in baseball by Baseball America, but his sophomore season was not quite as impressive as his first year had been. He was named to play in the 2024 Futures Game, but it was largely on the basis of what he had accomplished the year before, as in 16 starts for San Antonio, he went just 2-8, 6.01. On July 31st, he was one of four prospects traded by the Padres to the Miami Marlins to acquire two veteran relievers in Tanner Scott, who was coming off an appearance in the 2024 All-Star Game, and Bryan Hoeing. Joining him were Jay Beshears, Adam Mazur and Graham Pauley. He was first assigned to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos after the trade, staying in AA, and went 2-2, 4.00 in 7 starts. On September 20th, as the minor league season was winding down, the Marlins promoted him to the AAA Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, where he made one final start, which was an impressive one as he allowed just 2 rus (1 earned) in 6 innings while striking out 7 and walking just 1. Overall, his record for the season was 4-10, 5.15 in 24 games, with 115 strikeouts in 115 1/3 innings.
