Biographical Information[edit]

First baseman Rob Maurer had a couple of cups of coffee in the majors with the Texas Rangers.

An Evansville, Indiana native, Maurer starred at baseball, football, and wrestling in high school. He went on to attend the University of Evansville, where Andy Benes was a teammate. He then was selected by the Rangers in the sixth round of the 1988 amateur draft. He made his pro debut that summer with the Butte Copper Kings, hitting .391 to lead the Pioneer League. By 1990, he reached the AA level with the Tulsa Drillers, hitting .300 with 21 home runs despite missing about a month with a foot injury.

With the Oklahoma City 89ers in 1991, Maurer hit .301 with 20 homers and was an American Association All-Star. This performance earned him a September call-up to the majors; he went 1-for-16 in 13 games for the Rangers that fall. After another solid season at Oklahoma City in 1992, he went 2-for-9 in 8 games for the Rangers. However, he missed the entire 1993 season following knee surgery. He came back to the 89ers in 1994, hitting .258 with 11 home runs in 61 games before the knee issues returned and ultimately ended his career.
