Ria Cortesio was the only female umpire in 2007 in Minor League Baseball. She debuted in 1999 and had moved up to the AA Southern League by 2003. She worked the 2006 Futures Game and in 2007, became the first female umpire to work a major league spring training contest since Pam Postema in 1989. Cortesio was due to be the next umpire moved up to AAA had a vacancy arisen. Her ranking fell drastically in 2007, though, and she was let go by Minor League Baseball after the year.
