Biographical Information[edit]
Reuben Ewing appeared in three games for the 1921 St. Louis Cardinals. Despite his short tenure, he is interesting in a number of ways. First, he is one of very few players born in Odessa, which is in Ukraine. Second, he is the only major league player named Reuben (through 2019; Reuben Currie was blocked by the color line). Third, although he was in three games, he played only one inning defensively (as a shortstop); in his other games he was a pinch-hitter and a pinch-runner.
At age 21, he was four years younger than teammate Rogers Hornsby. He was not the only 21-year-old on the team that year; other 21-year-olds included Heinie Mueller, George Gilham and Tink Riviere.
He had attended Lebanon Valley College in 1921, so presumably he joined the Cardinals fresh out of college. Four other players who attended that college made their major league debuts in the 1920s.
