Biographical information[edit]

Ray Aguilar is a former minor league baseball pitcher who played in the Atlanta Braves, Florida Marlins and Oakland Athletics farm systems from 2001 to 2006, spending time at AAA. He is the brother of Rick Aguilar.

He was originally drafted in the 11th round of the 1998 amateur draft out of high school by the Toronto Blue Jays, however he did not sign. After he was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 25th round of the 1999 amateur draft, he did sign.

Although he was drafted in 1999, he did not begin his professional career until 2001 and then with a different organization, the Atlanta Braves. That year, he pitched for two teams - the GCL Braves (7 games, 5 starts, 3-1, 1.50 ERA) and the Jamestown Jammers (2 games, 2 starts, 1-1, 1.50 ERA) - going a combined 4-2 with a 1.50 ERA in nine games (seven starts). In 42 innings, he had 58 strikeouts.

He spent most of the 2002 season with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (35 games) although he did pitch one game for the Danville Braves. In 36 games (six starts), he went 8-1 with two saves and a 1.57 ERA in 108 2/3 innings, striking out 114 batters. He led all Braves farmhands in ERA.

In 2003, he spent most of the year with the Greenville Braves (35 games), although he spent one game with the Richmond Braves (he started the game, allowing one run in five innings, earning the win). Overall, he went 4-4 with a 2.66 ERA in 36 games (eight starts).

Compared to his past successes, Aguilar struggled a bit in 2004. He played for four teams that year - the GCL Braves (2 games, 2 starts, 0-1, 12.71 ERA), the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (4 games, 4 starts, 2-0, 2.25 ERA), the Greenville Braves (8 games, 7 starts, 2-3, 2.29 ERA) and the Richmond Braves (9 games, 9 starts, 2-4, 6.21 ERA) as he battled injury. Overall, he started 22 of his 23 games, going 6-8 with a 4.17 ERA.

For the 2006 season, he wound up in the Florida Marlins organization. That year, he started one game for the Jupiter Hammerheads and 13 for the Carolina Mudcats, going 6-2 with a 3.32 ERA overall.

He pitched for the Midland RockHounds in 2006, in the Athletics system. Despite allowing 190 hits in 158 2/3 innings, he posted a 12-7 record, along with a 4.54 ERA, in 28 starts. He tied Ryan Feierabend for the Texas League lead in starts and tied four other hurlers for the win lead.

Over the course of his six-year minor league career, Aguilar went 40-24 with a 3.26 ERA in 146 games (85 starts).
