Biographical Information[edit]
Rafael Landestoy was a middle infielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros and Cincinnati Reds in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He had been on the Dominican national team in the 1971 Amateur World Series. He played one game for the Dodgers in the 1977 World Series, but received most of his playing time with Houston. He was the Astros' regular second baseman in 1979 and played a career-high 149 games in 1980, splitting time with Joe Morgan at 2B and Craig Reynolds at SS and putting up a .247 batting average with 8 triples and 23 stolen bases. He played in all five games of the NLCS that year, going 2 for 9. He was never a regular after that, but kept playing as a utility infielder until 1984, never again breaking the Mendoza Line at the plate. He went 0 for 2 in the 1983 NLCS with the Dodgers. Still, he was a useful player as a sure-handed fielder who could handle a number of positions, and a speedy baserunner.
In 1989, Rafael Landestoy played for the Gold Coast Suns of the Senior Professional Baseball Association. He hit .323 with 9 stolen bases for the club. In 1990, Landestoy played for the Fort Myers Sun Sox, also of the Senior Professional Baseball Association. He was batting .250 in 23 games when the league folded.
After a year as a manager in the Pioneer League, he was the minor league infield instructor for the San Francisco Giants in 1988. He then served three years as the first base coach of the Montreal Expos from 1989 to 1991, under manager Buck Rodgers. He managed two years in the New York Mets organization in the mid-1990s and has also managed in the Dominican League, winning the league title with the Licey Tigers in 2005-06.
Landestoy's son, Michael Landestoy, played for Texas Christian University in the 2016 College World Series.
