The Pueblo Steelworkers joined the Western League in 1928. The club from Pueblo, CO had a strong start, finishing second in the first half (45-36) before slipping to 40-42 in the second half. Woody Hargrove (21-8) and Lou Fette (20-10) made the All-Star team, as did SS George Knothe (.318, league-best .957 fielding percentage at short) and OF Lee Riley (.370, 13 HR, third in average had he qualified in number of plate appearances). Bill Wano (.342, 13 HR) was fifth in the WL in hits (225) and second with 23 triples and Ernie Neitzke hit .340 with 21 homers. 3B Cotton Tierney hit .293 with 11 homers and led third basemen in fielding (.959).

The steelworkers fell to last (69-90) in their second season. Riley (.305, 24 HR, 27 3B) hit for a cycle, led the league in triples and was fourth with 352 total nases. Buster Chatham (.386, 13 HR) and Neitzke (.316, 12 HR) helped out and Bob L. Johnson (.273, 16 HR) split the year with Wichita.

In 1930 the club was renamed the Pueblo Braves.
