Biographical Information[edit]

"Pete Childs is playing a phenomenal second base for the Athletics." - Sporting Life of May 16, 1896, about Pete's performance for the minor-league Philadelphia Athletics of the Atlantic League.

"Pete was not heralded as a hitter, but he is lining them out quite regularly, and playing the second cushion a good deal better than it has ever been played by any previous guardian of the bag in this town..." - Sporting Life of May 14, 1898, about Pete Childs playing for Hartford

Pete Childs played in the National League in 1901 and 1902, seeing action with three teams. He had over 300 plate appearances in each season and played primarily second base. In 212 games, he appropriately hit .212. Oddly, although Pete is not listed as related to the much-better-known Cupid Childs, the two of them both played second base for the Chicago Orphans in 1901. Cupid was in 63 games at the position, while Pete was in 60.

Childs was born, and died, in Philadelphia. Through 1899, he played several seasons each in the Pennsylvania State League and the Atlantic League. After some time in the Connecticut League and the New York State League, he came up to the majors in 1901. After his major league days, he continued to play in the minors, mostly in the New York State League and the Ohio State League. He also managed several years in the minors.

Pete should not be confused with Pearce Chiles, whose last name was often misspelled Childs. Chiles, nicknamed "Petie", played for the Philadelphia Phillies a couple years before Childs.
