Biographical Information

Pedro San was the first major leaguer from the Dominican Republic. He was a submarine hurler.

He was the second Dominican to sign with a US pro team, following Baldomero Ureña by a year. He debuted in 1926, with the Cuban Stars, going 4-5 with a 4.84 ERA (92 ERA+). He improved to 9-8, 4.09 (114 ERA+) in 1927. He also saved a game. He tied Roy Roberts for 10th in the 1927 Eastern Colored League in wins, though he also led with 79 walks (two more than Roberts). He led the team in wins, three ahead of Oscar Levis.

In 1928, he was 3-5 with a 8.72 ERA (68 ERA+) to end his US career at 16-18, 5.38 (94 ERA+). He had hit .183/.206/.202 and been 1.7 Wins Above Replacement. He also played in Cuba (but not in the Cuban Winter League, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Colombia and his native Dominican Republic.

When the Negro Leagues were retroactively deemed major leaguers in 2020, he became the first Dominican big leaguer, replacing Ozzie Virgil Sr. by 30 years (other Dominicans followed in the Negro Leagues, with Tetelo Vargas and Horacio Martinez).
