Biographical Information[edit]

Pedro Powell has stolen 250+ bases in the minor leagues.

Powell was picked by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 18th round of the 2003 amateur draft. He hit .291/.364/.329 with 5 steals in 8 tries that summer for the GCL Pirates. He split 2004 between the GCL Bucs (.243/.302/.288, 22 SB in 25 attempts) and Lynchburg Hillcats (11 for 32, 9 R, 8 SB. 2 CS in 8 games). He was second in the Gulf Coast League in steals behind Ovandy Suero.

In 2005, Pedro played for the Hickory Crawdads and hit .272/.338/.310 with the only homer of his first 6 pro seasons. He stole 44 bases in 60 tries. He also played 8 games with Lynchburg again, going 10 for 34 with 2 steals and 9 runs. He placed 4th in the South Atlantic League in steals.

Powell spent all of 2006 with Lynchburg, hitting .263/.331/.281, with a .301 average against left-handed pitchers. He stole 63 bases in 79 tries. He led the Carolina League in steals, times caught stealing, outfield putouts (296) and outfield assists (16). He had 27 bunt singles that year. He was 6th in the affiliated minors in steals, leading Pirate farmhands, though the 2007 Baseball Almanac mistakenly lists Nyjer Morgan as doing so; Morgan had 4 fewer. Powell broke Rajai Davis's Lynchburg record for steals.

Powell had a similar season in 2007, with Lynchburg. He produced at a .241/.325/.303 clip with 7 triples, 71 runs and 67 steals in 84 tries. He had 287 putouts and 14 assists. He led Pirates farmhands in stolen bases and tied Darren Ford for 4th in the affiliated minors behind Suero, Eric Young Jr. and Emmanuel Burriss. Baseball America rated him as the best baserunner in the Carolina League. He tied for the most outfield assists in the circuit and led in steals despite missing two weeks with a strained oblique. He became the second player to lead the Carolina League in steals in consecutive seasons, following Jack Mitchell (1952-1953). Mostly a right-handed batter in his career, he switch-hit for part of the season.

Powell began 2008 with the Altoona Curve and hit only .148/.220/.148 after 45 games, with 6 steals in 7 tries. He was released by the Pirates and signed by the Tampa Bay Rays. They assigned him to the Vero Beach Devil Rays, for whom he batted .265/.404/.299 in 39 games, stealing 23 bases in 27 tries.

Pedro started with the Charlotte Stone Crabs to start off 2009. He ended up splitting the season with the Montgomery Biscuits, hitting a combined .252 with 28 stolen bases in 82 games.
