Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Pat Austin played in the minor leagues from 1986 to 1991. He was taken by the Detroit Tigers in the 5th round of the 1986 amateur draft, one pick ahead of pitcher Kevin Campbell and also ahead of future Cy Young Award winner Pat Hentgen.

The fleet-footed Austin began his career with a .309/.385/.406 slash line, stealing 48 bases and walking (31 BB) more than he struck out (28 K) for the rookie level Bristol Tigers in 1986. He followed that with a .297 average and 45 steals in 115 games for the Lakeland Tigers; he had 64 walks to just 38 strikeouts. He had another .297 year in 1988, stealing 24 bases in 89 games for the Glens Falls Tigers. He fell to .246/.341/.309 in 1989, hitting just .192/.288/.269 in his first stint (16 games) at Triple A, though he still stole 33 bases. He rebounded to .300 with 22 steals in 1990, his first spent outside the Tigers system, and though he hit .289 with 21 swipes in 1991, his career ended after that.

Overall, Austin hit .289/.366/.361 with 193 stolen bases, 261 walks and 254 strikeouts in 567 games over six seasons. With just 10 career home runs, he averaged one every 211 at-bats.
