Pacific Lutheran University was founded in 1894. Bjug Harstad, father of major leaguer Oscar Harstad was the school's first president. It was known as Pacific Lutheran Academy and Business College from 1898 to 1918 when it closed for 2 years. It re-opened as Pacific Lutheran College from 1920 until 1960 when its original name was reclaimed.
