Biographical Information[edit]
Relief pitcher P.J. Francescon began his professional career in 2011. He was taken by the Chicago Cubs in the 40th round of the 2011 amateur draft and was signed by scout Keith Ryman.
He was 1-4 with a 3.49 ERA in 38 2/3 innings his first pro campaign, split between the AZL Cubs, Peoria Chiefs and Daytona Cubs, striking out 44 batters and walking eight. In 2012, he was 8-7 with a 3.01 ERA and a 7.3 hits per nine innings ratio between Peoria and Daytona, and in 2013, he was 7-4 with a 4.59 ERA in 30 games (13 starts) between Daytona and the Tennessee Smokies. With Tennessee in 2014, he earned Mid-Season All-Star honors, going 11-6 with a 3.52 ERA in 43 relief appearances and in 2015, between Tennessee and the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, he was 4-2 with 21 saves and a 1.47 ERA in 45 games. He was again a Southern League Mid-Season All-Star and a MiLB.com Organization All-Star. In his first taste of Triple-A, he had a 0.00 ERA in three games. To begin the 2016 campaign, he was suspended 50 games for testing positive for a drug of abuse.
